Heliosat-V : a versatile method for estimating downwelling surface solar irradiance with satellite imagery

Downwelling solar irradiance at the Earth's surface (DSSI) is considered an Essential Climate Variable by the World Meteorological Organisation.

Such data are precious for Earth sciences as well as for the development of renewable energies like photovoltaic.
Ground-based measurements of this irradiance are very sparse on Earth's surface, explaining the interest for satellite-based estimates. Heliosat methods are designed for more than 30 years to retrieve DSSI from the imagery produced by meteorological satellites. But they have limitations: the need for long time series (Heliosat, Heliosat-2) or for multispectral measurements (Heliosat-4).

Scientific advances occured since first methods: new satellite missions, improved absolute calibration of observations, fast radiative transfer models and the increasing power of computers... These assets permit to develop conceptually simple methods, that rely on high quality data.

The Heliosat-V method aims at estimating consistently surface solar irradiance from radiometers embedded on different satellites. Two important issues to be treated are the diversity of spectral sensitivities of radiometric channels, and the influence of viewing geometries on satellite measurements.
Solving these issues will help to produce consistent DSSI datasets with extended spatial and time coverages.

The presentation will expose the development of the Heliosat-V method, its underlying assumptions and their limits, along with the first validation results and possible future applications.
