Recent progress on the properties of pure maritime aerosol, and “long-term” satellite aerosol records from SeaWiF

Aerosol remote sensing continues to offer challenges and new opportunities. In this talk, I will discuss two aspects of my work here at GSFC over the past year. The first concerns properties of pure maritime aerosol, using Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) data. In this we explore similarities and differences between marine aerosol at different locations, as well as relationships with meteorological parameters, and arrive at a model for use in applications such as satellite retrievals.  The second introduces a new 13-year aerosol dataset derived from Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) measurements. We look at some changes in aerosol loading observed over the duration of the dataset, as well as from other datasets, and briefly discuss some difficulties when trying to discover trends.
