AERONET Version 3 Inversion Update

1. Changes and additions to Version 3 aerosol retrieval algorithm: new radiative transfer code, new extraterrestrial solar flux spectrum, accounting for NO2 and water vapor absorption, temperature correction of aerosol optical depth (AOD) and sky radiances at all the wavelengths, and new database for parameters of land bidirectional reflectance function (BRDF). The potential effect of each modification on aerosol retrievals and comparison of Version 3 to Version 2 aerosol retrievals statistics for selected AERONET sites are discussed.

2. Hybrid: new geometry of scan with extended scattering angles coverage and check symmetry. This scan geometry allows an extension of absorption retrievals to the range of smaller solar zenith angles (SZA). The statistics of hybrid single scattering albedo (SSA) inversions and comparison of hybrid to time collocated almucantar SSA retrievals is discussed.

3. Uncertainties of retrieved aerosol parameters. The concept of uncertainties estimation is discussed. The examples of SSA uncertainties for selected AERONET sites are presented and compared to uncertainties estimates by Dubovik et al., 2000. They are in general good agreement but new approach provides more detailed estimates in terms of wavelength and AOD.
