MODIS Atmosphere Remote Sensing Workshops

Understanding how to obtain and make proper use of remote sensing data can be a daunting task. Even for those who are familiar with remote sensing data there is a steep learning curve when faced with an unfamiliar sensor. The MODIS atmosphere remote sensing workshop attempts to give new users enough exposure and familiarity to the whole process of obtaining, understanding, and using MODIS atmosphere data products so that they can proceed to work with this data independently.

The workshop is built around MODIS aerosol and cloud products and is comprised of three 6 – 8 hour days. Hands on activities are stressed throughout the workshop therefore computer facilities and internet access must be available for all participants. All software used in the workshop is freely available. It is assumed that participants will have completed coursework or have a basic understanding of atmospheric science and remote sensing.

Topics covered during the workshop include:

  • The organization and structure of MODIS products
  • Searching for and obtaining data
  • How MODIS atmosphere products are constructed
  • Basic information about the MODIS sensor
  • Proper understanding and use of the most important aerosol and cloud parameters included in the data set
  • Software tools used for data analysis
  • The AERONET worldwide network of ground based
    sunphotometer data
  • The AERONET synergy tool
  • Important ancillary data sets
  • Aerosol product validation
  • On-line data analysis tools
  • An introduction to additional sensors in the A-train and the
    A-train data depot

In addition to the basic workshop it is possible to add content on MODIS land products and introductory material on additional sensors such as:

  • Parasol
  • MISR
  • Calipso

With enough advanced notice materials can also be prepared for other sensors.

Richard Kleidman is the lead instructor for the workshop. He has over 15 years of experience working with MODIS aerosol products at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. So far workshops have been held in the United States, Mexico, Brazil, India and Israel.

Recently a working group has been established to create materials and advance professional training and outreach activities in the area of atmospheric remote sensing. This working group includes members with expertise in remote sensing techniques for air quality and pollution. It may be possible to include content in this area.
