Multi-decadal trends of solar radiation reaching the surface: What is the role of aerosol?

We present an investigation on multi-decadal change of solar radiation reaching the surface, also known as "dimming" and "brightening", and possible role aerosol plays on such change. We use the aerosol fields simulated by the GOCART model and cloud, water vapor, and other fields from MERRA to calculate the shortwave downwelling radiation at the surface under all sky and clear sky conditions in the past three decades (1980-2009). The model calculated global surface radiation are compare with several satellite-derive products as well as with measurements from the surface networks. We use the model experiments with and without aerosol to attribute the role of aerosol in the 30-year radiation trends. The results may or may not surprise you...come to my talk to find out!
