The HYSPLIT atmospheric transport and dispersion modeling system

HYSPLIT, developed by NOAA’s Air Resources Laboratory (ARL), is one of the most widely used models for atmospheric trajectory and dispersion calculations. In this presentation I will talk about the model’s historical evolution from simple hand drawn back trajectories to very sophisticated computations of transport, mixing, chemical transformation, and deposition of pollutants and hazardous materials. Beginning with the foundational scientific work performed at ARL that inspired its conception, I will describe the changes and improvements that have been incorporated into the model over the last 30 years. In addition, I will present some examples of the more recent applications of the HYSPLIT modeling system, including the simulation of radiological releases, volcanic eruptions, windblown dust, and atmospheric tracer release experiments.
